RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in the surveillance and spread of pathogenic bacteria throughout California. I would like to know what environmental factors increase the presence of pathogenic bacteria associated with human illness, and what preventative measures can be taken to reduce such risks.

CURRENT PROJECTS

  • Reducing agricultural pathogens into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta estuary
  • Sampling of Central Coast streams and rivers for E. coli O157 and Salmonella, including water and sediment
  • Sampling of sheep fecal for Salmonella in the Imperial Valley
  • Monitering wild game for presence of E. coli O157
  • Assessing current protocols using standard growth curve and flow cytometry
  • Assisting in the Infectious Dose of E. coli O157 in calves
  • Assisting in the sampling of wild rodents for foodborne pathogens along produce fields on the California Central coast
