RESEARCH INTERESTS

As water moves through a watershed, it collects and drains into rivers, lakes, and groundwater. as it does this water picks up microorganisms, some of thse can be pathogneic and cause disease. Microbial water quality and pollution control are two areas that interest me the most..

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Reducing agricultural pathogens into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta estuary
  • Epidemiologic analysis and risk management practices for reducing E. coli in irrigation source water supplies and distribution systems
  • Watershed Management and Irrigation Source Water
  • Microbial communities and the effect on marine systems

LAB/FIELD EXPERIENCE

  • Design of efficient methods of membrane filtration of E.coliEnterococcus, and fecal coliforms.
  • Designed sampling protocols for studying ambient freshwater systems.
  • Responsible for collection of water samples using drop samplers, YSI mulitprobe sondes, flow meters, GPS enabled depth meter, and various other meteorological equipment.
  • Use of IMS technique for quantification of Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
  • Help design protocols for analysis of environmental samples.
  • Biochemical analysis of bacterial isolates.
  • Help graduate student with methods for detecting E. coliEnterococcusSalmonella, Camplyobacter and fecal coliforms in water and soil.
  • Collect water samples for preliminary testing following USEPA/FDA protocols.
  • Lead field and laboratory operations for the Mississippi Beach Monitoring Program. Field collection and analysis of samples using MPN and membrane filtration procedures were performed on water, sediment, and oyster meat samples. http://www.usm.edu/gcrl/msbeach.
  • Field collection of water samples and general laboratory assistance provided during Mississippi’s Coastal Watersheds TMDL Project (Bay St. Louis). Laboratory assistance provided for total dissolved solids, BOD, fecal coliform enumeration, and Chlorophyll a analyses.
  • Maintained a database for watershed biotic and abiotic parameters (e.g., temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, alkalinity, hardness, conductivity, etc.)
  • Coordinated sample collections from sewerage lift stations and analyzed effluent discharge water samples in support of grants and contracts focused on monitoring human health risks of bathing beaches and residential areas.
  • Supervised and trained graduate student laboratory workers in media preparation, decontamination of waste, general laboratory sanitary practices, and light field work and sample collection.
  • EPA Beach Watch Protocol for point and non-point source pollution.
  • Fulfilled requirements for FDA Split Sample Program for Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference. This was performed annually. Other annual proficiency tests were performed as required by management and/or contractor requirements under HACCP.
  • Identified gram-negative organisms on API 20Ne and IMViC, gram staining, and acid fasting.
  • EnterococcusE coli, and fecal coliform enumeration using the current EPA methods 1103.1, 1106.1, 1600, 1603, 1680, 1681 and other wastewater methods stated in Standard Methods.
  • Effectively maintained QA/QC laboratory programs for the Mississippi Shellfish Program, The Mississippi Beach Monitoring Prrogram, Mississippi Bay of St. Louis Watershed TMDL Wet Weather Project, Coastal Impact Assistance Program grants for Bacterial Source Tracking, 303(d) and 305(b) analytical support for Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality EPA water monitoring programs, previously known as Ambient Water Monitoring Program, and any other grant or project conducted during employment period.
